The Exhaust System
HomeWell not exactly a thrilling topic, exhaust systems, but they ARE vital to a healthy running engine.
Headers The 209 engine has six headers (3->1 then 2->1 on each side). These headers look to be original, and are in pretty good shape. I need to get these coated.
Those green resonators, on the other hand, are not original. The originals were replaced at some point, and whoever did it left the the spacing and number of resonators uneven. Then later the rear pipes were crushed almost flat and punctured.
The rearmost resonators and tips appear to be original, amazingly, as they had the Ferrari IGM part number stamped on the cross straps.
This is why you don't reuse original exhausts. Moving the pieces around, I could hear a ton of rust rattling inside, so that and the flattened pipes decided their fate: I cut them up and recycled the pieces.
Curious, I cut open one of the original resonators. Although it's supposed to a straight through flow path, I couldn't see through it for chunks of rust. Imagine what this would do to the poor engine trying to run! It appears the inner wall was a perforated tube, with who knows what between that and the outer shell. Fiberglass? Carbon for rudimentary emissions control? I don't know, but all that was left was carbon and rust.
The plan is to have the headers coated for cooling and longevity, and I will obviously have to replace the rest when that time comes.
